Gorillaz apologise to Armani (GQ Men Of The Year awards)

Gorillaz apologise to Armani (GQ Men Of The Year awards)
Damon Albarn is a man of few words. Collecting his award for GQ Band Of The Year 2010 with his Gorillaz cohort Jamie Hewlett, he said simply: "All I'd like to say is to apologise to Giorgio Armani for my appalling behaviour last time we met each other." Hewlett then echoed his apology, as did Jon Hamm later in the night (much to everyone's surprise). So what is the incident so terrible that Albarn felt the need to say sorry on stage? A look through our vintage copies of Record Collector (with some help from Gorillaz-news) revealed the truth: Armani had invited the band to Milan for two nights, entertained them at his invite-only nightclub Privé and then scheduled a 9am meeting the next day to discuss a denim ad campaign. Unfortunately things didn't quite go to plan. According to Hewlett, "Damon said to Giorgio, 'Listen mate: the only people in England wearing your jeans are football hooligans.'" The nadir of the meeting came next, courtesy of Albarn: "I was still drunk enou! gh to think I spoke Italian, and said, 'No, I don't need translation, I understand what Giorgio is saying.' I kept contradicting him and he got so fed up with me, he shouted 'Scusi! Shhh!" Needless to say they didn't get the campaign and hadn't seen Giorgio since - until they met again at the GQ Men Of The Year awards.
